Aviation significantly contributes to climate change through carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions and non-CO2 effects like contrails and nitrogen oxides, with the sector’s emissions growing faster than other transportation modes.
Aviation is responsible for a significant portion of global CO2 emissions, with estimates ranging from 2% to 3%.
Besides CO2, aircraft also release nitrogen oxides (NOx), water vapor, and soot, which contribute to global warming through processes like contrail formation and ozone formation.
Aviation emissions have been growing faster than any other mode of transport, with estimates suggesting that emissions could more than double by 2050 if unmitigated.
The combined effect of CO2 and non-CO2 emissions from aviation contributes to a significant portion of global warming.
While aviation contributes to a small percentage of global emissions, a large portion of the world’s population rarely flies, meaning that a small percentage of people are responsible for a large portion of aviation emissions.
The aviation sector is expected to continue to grow, which means that emissions are likely to increase unless there are significant changes in fuel efficiency, technology, or travel patterns.
